OUR HISTORY

We have welcomed new little babies to our congregation, watched couples join together in marriage and celebrated the lives of our loved ones over the years. Between youths groups, UCW, mens group and regular Sunday morning worship, St. Paul's United Church is rich with history and memories for many in the town of Deer Lake, Newfoundland.

The Christian faith began about 2000 years ago with the followers of Jesus and grew in the centuries after his death and resurrection. Disagreements evetnually led to the three major streams of Christian church that exist today.  All three traces their history to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.  The Roman Catholic and the Orthdox diverged at the beginning of the millennium, and in the 16th centure Pastor Martin Luther and like-minded broke away from the Catholic church which was the beginning of the Protestant movement and the United Church.

The United Church of Canada is the largest Protestant Christian denomination in Canada and the second largest Canadaian Christian denomination after the Roman Catholic Church.  The United Church was founded in 1925 as a merger of three Protestant denominations, the Methodist, Congregationalist and two-thirds of the Presbyteran churches in Canada.  There are approximately 3200 United Churches in Canada today.
